Changes Seen in Quarterly Productivity Indicators in The First Quarter of 2009

National Productivity Centre of Turkiye has published the quarterly productivity indicators (2005 based) related to the first quarter of 2009 on 03.08.2009. When the results are analysed, it is seen that production per hour worked has increased by 0.8% in “mining and quarrying” and by 3% in “electricity, gas and water supply” compared to the same quarter of the previous year (1st quarter of 2008). On the other hand, production per hour worked decreased by 11.7% and production per person employed decreased by 15.6% in manufacturing industry compared to the same quarter of the previous year (Figure 1). A decrease by 10.2% has been observed in the production per person employed in manufacturing industry compared to the last quarter of 2008 (Figure 2).

Figure 2. Production per person employed in manufacturing industry, by quarters

When the subsections of manufacturing industry are analysed, it is seen that both production per person employed and production per hour worked have increased in “manufacture of wood and wood products” and in “manufacture of pulp, paper and paper products; publishing and printing” in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the same quarter of the previous year (Figure 3). Production per person employed has increased by 26.6% while production per hour worked has increased by 14.6% in “manufacture of wood and wood products” compared to the first quarter of 2008.

A decrease has been observed both in production per person employed and production per hour worked in the subsections of manufacturing industry other than the ones mentioned above. Maximum decrease in production per person employed has been set at 43.2% in “manufacture of transport equipment” while maximum decrease in production per hour worked has been set at 34.9% in “manufacture of coke, refined petroleum products and nuclear fuel”.

If the indicators obtained in the first quarter of 2009 are compared with the ones related to the previous quarter (the last quarter of 2008), it is seen that both production per person employed and production per hour worked has increased in the subsections “manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products”, “manufacture of chemicals, chemical products and man-made fibres” and “manufacture of wood and wood products”. Among these subsections, “manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products” has shown the maximum increase (4.3%) in production per person employed compared to the previous quarter. “Manufacture of chemicals, chemical products and man-made fibres” and “manufacture of wood and wood products” have followed this (Figure 4, Figure 5). On the other hand, maximum decrease in both production per person employed and production per hour worked has been observed in “manufacture of food products, beverages and tobacco” among subsections of manufacturing industry.

Changes Seen in “Manufacture of Wood and Wood Products” Compared to the First Quarter of 2008

Among the subsections of manufacturing industry, maximum increase in both production per person employed and production per hour worked has been observed in “manufacture of wood and wood products” in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the same quarter of 2008. The rate of increase has been 26.6% for production per person employed and 14.6% for production per hour worked in this subsection (Figure 6). When the indexes of labour force and production, which are issued by TURKSTAT, are investigated, a decrease of 7.5% in production, 26.9% in employment and 19.3% in hours worked have drawn attention in this subsection in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the same quarter of the previous year (Figure 7). In other words, production has decreased in this subsection compared to the first quarter of 2008, but employment and hours worked have decreased by higher ratios. As a result of these changes, production per person employed and production per hour worked have shown increases. On the other hand, it can be concluded from the percentage changes in the employment and hours worked that hours worked per person employed has increased by 10.5% in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the same quarter of the previous year. When the previous data are examined, it draws attention that since the second quarter of 2008, “manufacture of wood and wood products” has been the subsection in which maximum increases in production per person employed have been observed compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
